Opi & Omi’s Scholarship is founded in honor of Claus K. L. Helbing and his late wife, Helga.
Claus and Helga believed deeply in access to education.
Claus Helbing’s Legacy (Opi)
Claus was born in war-torn Germany in 1937, earned his MD/PhD at The University of Bonn, and settled in New York City in 1969.
He dedicated 50 years to his practice in pediatric and adult allergy & clinical immunology, retiring fully in 2023.
He will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, humor, and unwavering loyalty.
Commitment to Service
Claus was a role model who positively impacted many lives.
His charitable history included presenting and teaching students at medical schools, volunteering at health clinics for low-income residents in Alexandria, VA, and running summer camps for severely asthmatic children.
